This fall semester at Jezebel, Sunday Boïs Club and HOTSPOT The Show bring you a series of workshops focused on creating space, skills, and stage time for transmasc*, masculine-of-center & questioning bodies to explore masc-coded movement and erotic energy on stage.
Over the course of two months (October & November), each sunday we’ll host different teachers bringing different skill sets, varying from embodiment and masc-coded gesture to floorwork, lap dance, balance and circus tricks, and urban dance moves.
The workshops are open to all levels: whether you’ve never performed before, already have a stage practice, or are just curious and want to explore new skills, you’re welcome.
* This is part of our mission to reclaim space for transmasc people: these workshops are not open to AMAB people (cis or gender non-conforming) and cis masc women. Identification under the “trans” umbrella is non-negotiable (at the free interpretation of the individual).
18/10 - POLE WARRIOR
W/ SPRING SHOWERS
Warriors come from different cultures and time periods, from tribal champions to elite professional soldiers. They can be historically real or completely imagined. In a time when queer communities continue to face threats and violence, we ask: How can we protect ourselves and the people we love? What might we do when we are under attack? Rather than approaching these questions through a conventional self-defence class, we explore them through play, performance and stunt fighting. Choose your outfit. Choose your weapon. Become your warrior. Because it's not a video game, doesn’t mean it can’t be a game.
The workshop creates a playful simulation of conflict. We will begin with a short introduction and a quick speed-dating exercise around our experiences with violence: What have we witnessed? What have we experienced? What does protection mean to us? What does it feel like to confront or avoid conflict? It is an invitation to explore conflict, power, protection and vulnerability through the joy of movement and imagination. A pole becomes the dividing line—or the referee—between the fighters. The warriors take their places in the room, and each combat begins with an introduction to the safety rules and boundaries. We will work with choreographed and improvised movement, using stunt-fighting techniques to explore confrontation without turning it into actual violence. We can try out different warriors, different weapons, different strategies—and discover what kind of warrior might live inside us.
The workshop is three hours long, double as long as our normal classes, which means that booking this classes will take away two credits from your pass - or two single class passes. If you don’t have a pass yet, we encourage you to buy the 10 credit GO YOUR OWN WAY pass at the price of your choice (normal/solidarity/support). With this pass you will be able to book all the workshops of the series that have the standard Jezebel Studio prices at a lower rate.
